"War, States & Intervention" a talk by Rory Stewart Rory Stewart shares his views and experiences on international intervention from the Balkans to Afghanistan. Rory will engage the audience in a Q&A session at the end of his talk. (Chatham House Rule Applies) Adventurer, writer & former diplomat, Rory Stewart has lived an extraordinary life. At the age of 27, after serving in the Balkans and Indonesia, he took time off from his Foreign Office role to walk 6000 miles across Asia including a 600 mile trek between Herat and Kabul in war torn Afghanistan. At the end of his 22 month journey he served for one year as Deputy Governor of Maysan Province in British administered Iraq. Leaving the Foreign Office in 2005, he returned to Afghanistan to set up the Turquoise Mountain Foundation, an independent NGO focused on the regeneration of Afghani traditional arts and historic areas. He is also the Ryan Family Professor of the Practice of Human Rights and the Director of the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Rory has written an account of his Afghan walk as well as a book detailing his experience as an administrator in Iraq. In 2009 Rory was selected as the Conservative Party candidate for Penrith & the Border. Rory will share his experiences and thoughts on international intervention from the Balkans to Afghanistan and answer questions from the audience at the end of his talk.
